"There is no bigger marker of leaders talent and performance than the actual performance of their teams." Which is quite a different set of skills from those that typically get people into senior leadership positions in the first place.
Despite this 85% of new managers receive no formal training (Gartner) and plenty of people are promoted into management positions simply because people like them, or they were good in their individual contributor roles (Chartered Management Institute).
And 'faking it till you make it' is a very tempting path forwards, but one worth resisting.*
These are some pretty shocking stats about just putting people into senior positions and expecting them to be good. Would love to hear of any notable examples - where companies have bucked the trend and really invested in their leaders, or indeed been bitten by a lack of investment in them.
*Great article by TOMAS CHAMORRO PREMUZIC AND RON CARUCCI about why you can't fake leadership.
